Disinfection Service for Kindergarten in Bukit Jelutong

Project Overview

A kindergarten in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam contacted us after several children fell ill with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). The kindergarten operator needed a thorough professional disinfection to ensure the premises were safe before reopening. With over 80 enrolled children aged 3 to 6 and 15 staff members, the stakes were high.

The operator had attempted basic cleaning with household disinfectants, but parents were understandably concerned and wanted confirmation that a professional service had been carried out. That is when they reached out to Mr Pest Control Shah Alam.

The Challenge

Kindergartens present unique disinfection challenges that standard commercial spaces do not:

• Child safety is paramount: Every chemical used must be non-toxic, food-grade safe, and leave no harmful residue on surfaces children touch, sit on, and put in their mouths
• High-touch surfaces everywhere: Toys, learning materials, play equipment, small furniture, door handles at child height, toilet seats, and shared eating areas all require individual attention
• Soft surfaces: Nap mats, cushions, fabric play areas, and carpeted zones need specialised treatment that hard-surface wiping cannot address
• Air quality: Young children are more sensitive to airborne chemicals, so the disinfection method must not leave lingering fumes
• Minimal downtime: Parents rely on the kindergarten for childcare, so the facility needs to reopen as quickly as possible

Our Solution

We designed a comprehensive disinfection protocol specifically for this kindergarten, using our proven 3-step approach.

Step 1: Assessment and Preparation

Our team visited the kindergarten on a Friday evening to conduct a thorough assessment. We mapped out all areas requiring treatment, identified high-risk zones (toilets, dining area, play zones), and noted specific materials that required special handling.

We prepared a detailed treatment plan and shared it with the kindergarten operator, including the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals to be used. This transparency helped build confidence with both the operator and concerned parents.

Step 2: Full Disinfection Treatment

The treatment was carried out on Saturday morning, covering the entire 2,500 sq ft premises:

• ULV (Ultra-Low Volume) misting: We used hospital-grade, child-safe disinfectant in our ULV fogger to create a fine mist that reaches every corner, crack, and surface — including areas that manual wiping cannot access. The mist settles on all surfaces, providing comprehensive coverage.
• Surface wiping: After misting, our team manually wiped all high-touch surfaces with quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) solution — door handles, light switches, tables, chairs, shelving, and bathroom fixtures.
• Toy and equipment sanitisation: All toys, learning materials, and play equipment were individually wiped with child-safe sanitiser. Soft toys and fabric items were treated with antimicrobial spray.
• Air conditioning treatment: AC filters and vents were cleaned and disinfected to prevent recirculation of pathogens.
• Kitchen and dining area: Food preparation surfaces received food-grade sanitiser treatment, and all utensils were individually sanitised.

Step 3: Verification and Handover

After the treatment dried (approximately 2 hours), we conducted ATP (adenosine triphosphate) swab tests on key surfaces to verify the effectiveness of the disinfection. ATP testing provides an objective, measurable result that confirms surfaces are hygienically clean.

We provided the kindergarten operator with a detailed completion report including before-and-after ATP readings, a certificate of disinfection service, and a recommended maintenance schedule.

Results

The kindergarten reopened the following Monday with full confidence from both the operator and parents:

• 100% surface coverage: All classrooms, toilets, kitchen, play areas, and common spaces were treated
• ATP test results: All tested surfaces passed hygiene standards with readings below 100 RLU (relative light units)
• Zero chemical residue concerns: All products used were child-safe and left no harmful residue after drying
• Parent confidence restored: The completion certificate and ATP test results were shared with parents, providing documented proof of professional sanitisation
• No further illness outbreaks: In the weeks following treatment, no additional HFMD cases were reported at the kindergarten

Ongoing Maintenance Plan

Following the initial emergency disinfection, we established a monthly maintenance programme for the kindergarten:

• Monthly ULV misting of all areas during the last weekend of each month
• Quarterly deep disinfection including AC units and soft furnishings
• Emergency response availability within 24 hours for any illness outbreak
• Staff training on daily sanitisation best practices between professional treatments

Why Kindergartens Need Professional Disinfection

Young children are more vulnerable to infectious diseases because their immune systems are still developing. In a kindergarten environment where children share toys, eat together, and play in close contact, pathogens spread rapidly. Regular household cleaning products are not sufficient to eliminate viruses and bacteria that cause HFMD, influenza, and gastroenteritis.
