๐ก Key Takeaways
- German cockroaches are the most common species in Malaysian F&B outlets
- Gel bait targets the entire colony โ not just the cockroaches you see
- Drain and grease trap treatment eliminates hidden breeding sites
- Regular monthly maintenance prevents re-infestation in commercial kitchens
- Treatment can be done outside operating hours with zero business disruption
Cockroach Gel Baiting for 3-Storey Mamak Restaurant Near Setia Alam Commercial Centre
Mei Ling manages a 3-storey mamak restaurant near the Setia Alam commercial centre โ an 80-seat establishment with an open kitchen concept, 15 staff, and operating hours stretching from 7am to 2am. The restaurant had been battling cockroaches for months.
The Problem
The situation was severe. German cockroaches had established multiple colonies throughout the kitchen and food preparation areas. Mei Ling described finding cockroaches in the roti canai station, inside the tandoor area, behind the beverage counter, and โ most concerning โ on plates in the dish rack.
Previous attempts using over-the-counter sprays provided temporary relief but the cockroaches always returned within days. The grease trap had not been professionally cleaned in months, and the floor drains were breeding grounds for both cockroaches and drain flies.
When we inspected, we found:
- Heavy German cockroach activity in 6 of 8 kitchen zones
- Egg cases in the motor housing of two commercial fridges
- Cockroach droppings inside electrical switch plates and behind wall tiles
- Drain fly larvae in 3 of 5 floor drains
- Grease trap overdue for cleaning โ a major attractant and breeding site

Our Approach
Restaurant pest control requires food-safe methods and scheduling around operations. We designed a treatment plan that worked with the restaurant's schedule โ treatments between 2am and 6am, before the morning prep crew arrived.
Treatment Process
- Night 1 โ Deep treatment: Gel bait application at 80+ points throughout the kitchen โ inside cabinet hinges, behind equipment, inside conduit boxes, along pipe runs, and in every crack and crevice where cockroaches harbour.
- Night 1 โ Drain treatment: Enzymatic drain cleaner applied to all floor drains, followed by residual insecticide to kill existing populations. The grease trap was flagged for professional cleaning (arranged separately).
- Night 1 โ Perimeter treatment: Residual spray applied to external walls, waste area, and loading zone โ non-food contact areas only.
- Week 2 โ Follow-up: Bait stations checked, additional gel bait applied to active areas. Cockroach population significantly reduced.
- Ongoing โ Monthly programme: Scheduled monthly visits including bait replenishment, drain treatment, monitoring trap checks, and documentation for health inspection compliance.

Results
By week 2, cockroach sightings had reduced by approximately 80%. By month 2, the kitchen was effectively cockroach-free. The monthly programme maintains this standard.
We also installed two insect light traps (ILTs) โ one in the kitchen and one near the waste area โ to monitor and capture flying insects.
"We tried spraying ourselves for months โ wasting money and not solving anything. The professional gel bait approach from Mr Pest Control Shah Alam was completely different. No disruption to our operations, and the results were fast. The monthly programme and documentation also helps us with MBSA inspections."
