• Sugar ants (ghost ants): Tiny, pale-coloured ants attracted to sweet foods. The most common kitchen invader in Malaysian condos. They nest in wall voids, behind tiles, and inside electrical outlets.
• Pharaoh ants: Small yellowish-brown ants that are notoriously difficult to eliminate. They form multiple colonies (budding) when disturbed, which is why spraying them actually makes the problem worse.
• Carpenter ants: Large black ants that hollow out timber for nesting — not for eating. If you see these near wooden cabinets or door frames, they may be causing structural damage.
• Weaver ants (kerengga): Usually outdoor ants, but they sometimes enter ground-floor or low-rise units. They bite and are aggressive when disturbed.

DIY Methods That Actually Work

Before calling a professional, there are several effective steps you can take to reduce and control an ant problem in your condo kitchen.

1. Eliminate Food Sources

This is the single most important step. Ants are in your kitchen because they found food. Remove the food source and you remove their reason to be there.

• Wipe down all kitchen surfaces after cooking — countertops, stovetop, and dining table
• Store sugar, honey, and sweet condiments in airtight containers
• Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight
• Sweep or vacuum the kitchen floor daily, paying attention to corners and under appliances
• Empty the rubbish bin every evening and use a bin with a tight-fitting lid
• Clean up pet food bowls — leftover pet food is a major ant attractant

2. Break the Pheromone Trail

Killing individual ants does nothing if the pheromone trail remains. Other ants will follow the same invisible path within minutes. To break the trail:

• Wipe the ant trail with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water
• Alternatively, use soapy water (dish soap mixed with water) to clean the trail path
• Clean the entire length of the trail, not just one section

3. Seal Entry Points

Ants in condos typically enter through gaps around pipes under the sink, spaces around window frames, cracks in tile grouting, gaps where electrical conduits enter the wall, and the front door threshold. Use silicone sealant to close these gaps. Pay special attention to the area where pipes penetrate the wall under your kitchen sink — this is the number one entry point in condo kitchens.

4. Use Gel Baits (Not Sprays)

This is critical. Do not spray ants with insecticide. Sprays only kill the ants you can see — which represent less than 10% of the colony. Worse, with pharaoh ants, spraying triggers colony budding, splitting one colony into multiple new ones.

Instead, use ant gel baits. Place small dots of gel bait along the ant trail, near entry points, and inside cabinets. The foraging ants eat the bait and carry it back to the nest, where it is shared with the queen and other colony members. Within 7 to 14 days, the entire colony is eliminated.

Look for gel baits containing fipronil or imidacloprid — these are the active ingredients used by professional pest control services.

5. Natural Deterrents

While not as effective as gel baits for eliminating colonies, these natural methods can help deter ants:

• Cinnamon: Sprinkle ground cinnamon along windowsills and entry points
• Peppermint oil: Mix 10 to 15 drops with water in a spray bottle and apply to ant trails
• Lemon juice: Squeeze along doorways and window frames
• Diatomaceous earth: Sprinkle food-grade DE in cracks and crevices — it is non-toxic to humans and pets
