Why You See More Cockroaches During Rainy Season

Every year during the monsoon season (October to March), Shah Alam homeowners notice a sudden increase in cockroach activity. They appear in kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms — seemingly out of nowhere. Here is why, and what you can do about it.

Why Rain Brings Cockroaches Inside

Flooded habitats: American cockroaches normally live in drains, manholes, and underground pipes. When heavy rain floods these spaces, cockroaches are forced above ground and seek shelter in the nearest dry space — your house.

Rising water table: In areas with poor drainage — common in older sections of Shah Alam — the water table rises during prolonged rain, pushing cockroaches upward through floor drains and pipe openings.

Humidity: Cockroaches thrive in humidity. Rainy season provides ideal conditions for breeding. German cockroaches inside your home breed faster, while American cockroaches from outside are more active.

Open doors and windows: During rain, many homeowners open windows for ventilation. Flying American cockroaches are attracted to light and enter through open windows, especially at night.

The Two Main Culprits

American cockroaches (the large, flying ones) are the main rainy season invaders. They come from outside — drains, garden debris, and neighbouring properties. They are not nesting in your home; they are fleeing flooded habitats.

German cockroaches (small, light brown) are indoor residents year-round but breed faster during rainy season due to increased humidity. If you already have a small German cockroach population, it can explode during monsoon.

What to Do During Rainy Season

• Seal floor drains. Install drain covers with fine mesh. Check drains in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas.
• Close gaps around pipes. Use silicone sealant where pipes enter from outside. Check under sinks, behind toilets, and around aircond drainage.
• Close windows at dusk. American cockroaches are most active at night and fly toward lights. Close windows or install mesh screens.
• Fix leaks immediately. Rain + leaks = extra moisture that cockroaches love.
• Schedule pre-monsoon treatment. Professional cockroach treatment before rainy season creates a barrier that reduces invasion throughout monsoon.

Pre-Monsoon Treatment
