Fly Management — Wet Market Stall, Seksyen 5 Case Study

The stall operator contacted Mr Pest Control Shah Alam three days before a scheduled health department inspection. A fish stall at the Seksyen 5 wet market had been struggling with persistent fly problems for several weeks, and the owner was worried about failing the inspection and risking his trading licence.

The Problem

Wet markets are notoriously challenging environments when it comes to fly control. Fish stalls in particular attract large numbers of houseflies and blowflies due to the combination of raw protein, moisture, and organic waste. The stall in question at the Seksyen 5 market had no fly management system in place — no traps, no repellent, and no routine pest control service.

When our technician arrived for the initial assessment, the conditions were as follows:

• Heavy presence of houseflies and blowflies throughout the stall area
• No existing fly traps or fly screens in place
• Exposed drainage channel behind the stall serving as a breeding site
• Organic waste and fish scales accumulating in drain gaps
• Adjacent stalls also contributing to the overall fly pressure in the area

The stall operator had previously tried commercial fly sprays from the hardware store, but these only provided a few hours of relief before flies returned in full force. Chemical sprays are also unsuitable for regular use near food, making a proper pest management solution essential.

Our Approach

Given the tight timeline before the health inspection, we prioritised an approach that would deliver fast, visible results without disrupting the stall's daily operations. Our fly control programme for food-handling environments combines two complementary methods: physical fly capture via UV electric fly traps, and a residual organic repellent treatment applied to surfaces and the surrounding area.

We also advised the stall operator on basic sanitation practices that would support the effectiveness of the treatment — in particular, covering waste bins, sealing drain gaps where possible, and ensuring fish waste was cleared at the end of each trading day. These housekeeping measures are not a replacement for professional fly control, but they do significantly reduce the breeding pressure that sustains a fly population.

The Treatment

Treatment was carried out early in the morning before the market opened, allowing sufficient drying time before trading commenced. The process involved the following steps:

1. Site assessment: We identified the primary fly entry points, breeding sources, and high-activity zones within and around the stall.
2. UV fly trap installation: Two UV electric fly traps were installed at strategic positions — one at the front of the stall to intercept incoming flies, and one at the rear near the preparation area. The units use UV light to attract flies and a glue board to capture them, with no chemicals involved. They are fully food-safe and approved for use in food-handling environments.
3. Organic fly repellent treatment: A food-safe organic fly repellent was applied to wall surfaces, the underside of the stall counter, the drain perimeter, and the external area around the stall. This creates a residual barrier that deters flies from landing and breeding in the treated area.
4. Drain treatment: A biological drain treatment was applied to the exposed drainage channel to break down organic material and eliminate a key breeding site.
5. Follow-up guidance: We provided the operator with a written maintenance checklist and scheduled a follow-up visit one week after treatment to check trap catch levels and reapply if necessary.

Results

By the following morning — less than 24 hours after treatment — the stall operator reported a marked reduction in fly activity. The UV traps had already captured a significant number of flies overnight, and the repellent treatment was visibly deterring flies from landing on counter surfaces.

When the health department inspection took place on the scheduled date, the stall passed without issue. The inspecting officer noted the presence of the UV fly traps and the clean condition of the drain area as positive factors.

At the one-week follow-up visit, fly activity remained low. We refreshed the glue boards on both UV traps and reapplied a light top-up of organic repellent around the drain area. The stall operator subsequently signed up for a monthly maintenance programme to keep the fly management system running consistently throughout the year.
